A Song 160

Bread, butter, jam of
a priest,
pouting a roll of tambakoo,
jostles turtles in the temple
pond;
spends hours with them
as they string their way from
rain jacketed hills
across the mangroves.
Some crawl their way to seas,
some in creeks,
some in the temple pond
safe in company
of the priest.
